Otranto
Take some time to enjoy a walk through the historic center of the “Gateway to the East.”
We recommend visiting the beautiful Cathedral, which houses an unmissable mosaic depicting the Tree of Life.
From Otranto to Uggiano
14km
If you choose the walking route, you’ll be able to admire the beauty of Punta Palascìa, the easternmost point of Italy, and discover the stories behind the ruins of the Abbey of San Nicola in Casale.
Through the cycling route instead, you’ll ride along panoramic roads and explore the fascinating megaliths scattered throughout the countryside.
At the end of the day, enjoy a delicious olive oil tasting at the underground oil mill Frantoio Ipogeo del Borgo Mulino a Vento.
From Uggiano to Vignacastrisi

On the walking route, you’ll follow easy, accessible trails where you can admire the typical landscape of our region.
Alternatively, the cycling route will lead you along some of the most captivating trails in Salento, connecting iconic scenic spots.
Upon arrival, some relax with a well-deserved aperitif featuring local products, followed by a special live show cooking demonstration where traditional orecchiette pasta will be prepared
From Vignacastrisi to Tricase

After a reach breakfast, walkers will follow ancient rural paths that preserve Salento’s farming traditions.
Alternatively, the cycling route will lead you through delightful coastal and rural villages along stunning panoramic trails.
The day ends in the center of Tricase, where you'll visit a local ceramics workshop.
From Tricase to Leuca
11km
The final day is dedicated to exploring the typical landscapes of Salento. On foot, you’ll follow the dry-stone walls that outline paths through the inland countryside.
Continuing along the final stretch of the Southern Via Francigena, you’ll head toward the sea to visit enchanting sites such as the Cipolliane Caves and the Ciolo Canyon.
If you choose to cycle, you’ll ride across the opposite side of the Salento ridge, leading to the Leuca promontory, where the fascinating Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Leuca awaits.
The excursion ends with a guided tour of Finibus Terrae, where elements of paganism and religion intertwine.

This Salento Outdoor is suitable to anyone with a minimum of training to the bicycle. The daily mileage ranges from 8 to 15 kilometers per day, with almost irrelevant or not very challenging differences in altitude and travel times between 2.5 and 4 hours.
The hiking and cycling excursions wind along dirt paths and country roads, with some rare but essential passages on busy roads.
We recommend that you equip yourself with comfortable shoes suitable for trekking, a hat, water, sunscreen, a swimsuit and a raincoat in case of rain.

Getting there
Reaching Otranto is very easy.
BY TRAIN. The main train station to refer to is Lecce. From there, you can reach Otranto via the Ferrovie del Sud Est railway network.

Note: on public holidays, train services are reduced.
BY AIR.The nearest airports are Brindisi and Bari. From there, you can reach Otranto using public transportation.

BY CAR. For those traveling by car, take the A16 highway and exit at Bari Nord. From there, continue towards Lecce. Then take the Eastern ring road (Tangenziale Est) following the signs for Otranto, Santa Maria di Leuca, and Maglie. Google.maps.com can be helpful.
Back to Airport
From Leuca, you can reach Lecce or Brindisi by train. The nearest station is Gagliano del Capo, which can be reached by taxi from Leuca in about 10 to 15 minutes.
Tickets are inexpensive (between €5 and €6.50), but the journey is fairly long—around 2 hours and 30 minutes—with changes usually required at Zollino or Nardò.
Note: Train services are reduced on Sundays.
